The real reason why Filipinos suck

Filipinos, as a people, nation, and culture, have an identity crisis and an inferiority complex.

There, I said it. Anyone who thinks or says otherwise is either clueless or in denial. Herein lies the problem: it is a cowardly society where nobody takes accountability for themselves.

For a group that hasn't much to show for itself, it sure is so loud and proud. Filipinos put their nationality and origin ahead of everything else, including their own individualism. For a big shiny example of this, look at the Miss Universe 2013 competition. The final ten contestants each gave a solo video speech about themselves. Miss Philippines was among them. And out of the ten remaining ladies, Miss Philippines was the ONLY one who did not talk about herself. Instead, she talked about the COUNTRY, highlighting its natural beauties and beaches or some shit like that.

This bothered me to no end, and is very indicative of how most Filipinos think and conduct themselves. Their sense of self takes a backseat to some macroscopic idea that simply having their own nation validates their existence as people. Rather than let the world know who Miss Philippines is as a person, she cowers behind advertising the Philippines instead. Way to be charming and relateable. Could you imagine Miss Japan dodging personal questions to brag about the beauty of Mt. Fuji, or hearing Miss Italy prattle on about how great her country's food is? It would seem so arrogant and pretentious, wouldn't it?

The irony is that Filipinos rely so much on "being Filipino" for their identity as if to give an impression that Filipinos have this sense of community as a people and culture. Reality check: there is no sense of community among Filipinos. Filipinos hang on to each other and band together only when it's convenient to. But on a normal given day, Filipinos will be vindictive, covetous, insecure, judgmental, and looking to one-up each other. Jealousy, self-entitlement, and crab mentality run really deep and it permeates every level of society, even within families. I get no sense of togetherness when in public, even in America, Filipinos cut each other in line and don't care to do simple courteous things like saying thank you for holding a door open.

So you're proud to be Filipino, but do you really care to make Filipino society better? I doubt it! And it's that culture of inaction for why the country will never improve. Face it: "pinoy pride" is a lazy state of mind that Filipinos can take with them anywhere without having to actually do anything.

I've never seen Japanese or Koreans posting their flags so visibly in public for everyone to see. I've seen Filipino flags and stickers on cars, on caps and shirts, pins on bags, even tattoos of the flag on arms and necks. What's with the overflow in shameless pride? It's obnoxious and unwarranted. Modesty and humbleness only comes with confidence and security, which are traits Filipinos do not possess. Filipinos rely on things above their own selves to feel validated. They have to make it clear to the whole universe that they're Filipino first before their own individual voice and personality. No personal accountability. Cowering behind national pride is the easy way out.

Oh, one thing I have to get out to Filipinos: stop bandwagoning. It's embarrassing and shows how insecure and pathetic you are. Jessica Sanchez does not represent you Filipinos. Stop claiming her as your own. She was born and raised in America became successful under the American system. She is not entitled to owe anything to the Philippines. Her achievements are not achievements of the Philippines or its people. She's not even full Filipino. There was an outcry when Jessica lost. Well, she was simply not the best overall contestant in the competition. Get over it.

I could continue on for literally another 10 paragraphs about this, but I'm tired. Let the flaming commence.

  4. When I read this article I have a strong impression that I'm the one who wrote it because it describes exactly what I think of the Filipino culture and mindset. It's impossible to deny what it says in this article when we go in this country. Everything is true. Here's my favorite and most funny part:Could you imagine Miss Japan dodging personal questions to brag about the beauty of Mt. Fuji, or hearing Miss Italy prattle on about how great her country's food is? It would seem so arrogant and pretentious, wouldn't it?
Once I heard that cunt in an interview and I still can't believe how fucking hypocrite she is. When you listen her you almost believe that the Philippines is an ideal country to live:people are super civilized and disciplined, great salaries, great working conditions and human rights, no kids work, no slums, very clean and quiet etc... La bella vita! And I'm sure she believes her own lies...
Now there is something I would like to understand; If Filipinos are so proud and united and nice and happy and cute and smiley how that want us to believe, then why the hell did they massively vote and still support an incompetent psychopath like Duterte who pretends he can fix this pirate island of country with a genocide like the khmer rouge did? How can you be stupid enough to believe this? You Pinoys never learn from your mistakes.
I saw tons of different social problems in the Philippines but NONE OF THEM HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH ILLEGAL DRUGS!!! Filipinos don't give a crap about drugs. It's just an excuse to see their neighbors cold dead in a black bodybag because Filipinos are jealous of others. Never waste your time asking a Filipino why he supports Duterte because you will only hear some lies and nonesense. Filipinos are great to justify mediocrity. They do it all the time.
About 85% of Filipinos support this little brown tough guy of Duterte but on the other hand they act like little pussies. You see them taking selfies of themselves in the most ridiculous places. They often have giant statues or big silly plastig dolls of the virgin Mary in their minuscule house. Wtf a man is doing this in his house? How a man can sit in front of his little tv and watch stupid shows like Eat Bulaga and Woowoowee until the end? It's about time to go outside and start a sociocultural revolution. Do they want to remain backward like this forever?

  6. Wow... what are courageous, well-said and truthful assessment. You've said everything I want to said... from being a vinductive person with its culture to being overly-possessive to that of a culture with its abominable "crab mentality" character. Yes, speaking of Jessica Sanchesz, she's a filipino by blood. But she's now a part of an "American Culture withits system."( I am an American by citizen in informal way. I already adopting United States Of America as my own nation) Same to some P.B.A.Players who are very exemplery but unfortunately " grew-up" in the United States where they began adopting quality basketball techniques.( Its american!) Thanks for non-fanatical assessment.

  7. Thank you for being so honest and forthright someone needed to say this. I’m a Filipino American I’m proud of my heritage but I must admit that I feel more at home with Americans than Filipinos, not a racist comment at all, it’s just that Filipinos are always in denial and I’m sick of their jealousy and inertia, their sense of entitlement, I have an uncle who was practicing black magic, cursing me because he wanted my dad to change his will and give everything to him, I mean, I don’t believe that stuff but still events like this leave a bad taste that lingers, is this the Filipino idea of family? Pray that someone drops dead just because you’re jealous and greedy? Just because you didn’t immigrate to America you want all Americans to die? I’m fed up, I have no sentimental longing for the homeland, yes I love my ancestors and heritage but I want to experience a new way of being Filipino, the future timebtgat is NOw

  8. Thank you! I needed to hear this, I’ve been doing some serious soul dear and for a long time I was feeling guilty about not wanting to go to the Philippines or even talk with my toxic relatives, I had a hard time reconciling my genuine love of being Filipino with my total unease with the people even of my kin but your blog hit the jugular: I can’t stand them because they can’t stand me. I’m an artist, I have a strong personality and a strong sense of identity and every time I paint and write they call my an ambitious American whore they make fun of me for not being married but that’s because I take the Catholic sacrament of Marruage very seriously I refuse to marry for money or put up with a man who has a mistress, unlike my hypocritical cousins who just use Pinot pride and a loveless marriage to guvevthem some semblance of respectability , I may seem badass but I take the words of Christ very seriously: love thy neighbor as yourself, do not covet the lives and possessions of others....

  9. Mount Fuji yes! That’s why I’d rather go to Japan than the Philippines, I’m sick of these Pinoys who have no sense of self and post endless selfies on religious pilgrimages, what hypocrites

  10. Okay okay I get it, Filipinos want everyone to be the SAME! The worse crime is for you to succeed and be better for them they want to kill you for that, that’s why my cousins hate me, because I’m actually DOING something about my goals, that’s why their dad practices black magic, hoping I get hit by a truck, in their eyes I’m surpassing them and to Pinoys this is a crime worse than murder, they truly have no value for human life, no matter how religious they say they are, they are a big cult, the whole archipelago continues to drink the look-aid, God help us

  11. Yes you’re right, illegal drugs have nothing to do with their problems, they just want an excuse to kill poor people and happy party animals because they are so damn envious and matapobre, you hit the crucified nail on the head

  12. We should be the richest nation in Asia we have the finest coconuts the most magnificent eagle and orchid but we throw it all out and squander our resources because we don’t care if the whole country sinks as long as we can take selfies and wear all our fake diamonds to stupid parties where everyone brags that their children are better than yours

  13. Thank thank you for helping me to understand the reason for the low grade depression I’ve has most of my life—this Pinou culture that constantly imposed itself on me even though I’m an American citizen. My parents, out of their guilt, never stood up to the toxic relatives, including the cousin who wanted to get my grand piano just because...she felt entitled to it and thought that since I was away at grad school that I wasn’t playing it...that kind of selfish attitude that has tormented my poor father and made him feel guilty for being successful, it has to stop, these same relatives who say they are so concerned about me and want to put me into an arranged marriage so they could control me and my dad? No way, if you truly love someone set them free and let them live life in peace stop bad mouthing the United States just because you were too lazy to immigrate here in the 1970s, when it was so easy to come here, too late now, no fault but your own

  14. I am tired of websites and quora that laud Filipinos SS being hospitable, kind, helpful, that are intiral denial of our weaknesses and lack of accountability, this is why I appreciate your blog, tough love that we all need to own, change starts within

  15. I remember the first time I was scrapyard by my relatives: I was talking about my goals as an artist, my passion for American history and determination to overcome stuttering, they accused me of being selfish and not taking care of my parents, they truly believe that in order to be a good Filipino you cannot have any sense of self, you need to only talk about being Filipino, all other hopes and dreams are “evil”. Fast forward 29 years and I’m the caretaker of my elderly dad, I also paint and write, who says you can’t take care of your parents (unconditionally without any agenda) and also take care of yourself?

  16. Paradox alert! A country/ group are only as strong as its individuals, and the only way you can truly be a part of a team is if you yourself are a team player, and that requires long stretches of solitude and self reflection
